[ARCHIVED] ATA Bus Survey

Proposed JC Routes

A Message from ATA Bus:

ATA Bus is considering options to improve bus service in the Flint Hills region. The map in the image shows how service could be redesigned in Junction City.

The proposed network consists of a mix of fixed-route and microtransit services. Fixed-routes are the traditional way of operating bus service, with buses running on set schedules along designated routes. However, for fixed-route service to work well, it also requires a pedestrian-friendly environment so that riders can easily get to and from bus stop locations.

Microtransit is a new approach to transit service that works well in areas that are difficult to serve with traditional fixed-routes. Microtransit operates a lot like Uber and Lyft, but uses small transit vehicles instead of regular cars. Riders request trips through an app (although a call-in option is also available), and are usually picked up within 30 minutes. Other riders may also be pickup and dropped off along the way during the trip. Microtransit service is typically provided within a specific zone, and riders can use it for close-by trips within the zone, or to connect to fixed-routes for longer trips across town. The proposed network aims to improve the fixed-route service by ensuring that each route has numerous convenient connections to key activity centers like grocery stores, medical facilities, and educational destinations. In addition, schedules are coordinated to improve both service frequency between key destinations and the convenience of transfers between routes.

No changes are currently being proposed for the regional Demand Response service.
