Citizen's Fire Academy

The Junction City Fire Department Citizen Fire Academy was designed to increase awareness and promote interaction between the Junction City Firefighters and the citizens of Junction City and Geary County. The Purpose of the Citizen Fire Academy is to enhance awareness of the fire department capabilities and limitations with regards to the fire and emergency medical aspects of the job.

Participants will experience firsthand what Firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics do during a shift. Class member are expected and encouraged to fully participate in the training sessions. Upon completion of the Citizen Fire Academy, the participants that meet all of the requirements will be asked to participate in a graduation ceremony to receive their certificate of completion.

Requirements

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and live in Junction City or Geary County. All applicants must submit to a background check and must sign a waver releasing the City of Junction City of all liabilities while participating in the Academy. Participants will be notified by mail if accepted. 

Participants will also be asked to signed a release giving the fire department permission to use any pictures that may be taken during the Academy, and will be required to sign a medical privacy agreement. There will be no charge to participate in the Academy.

Class Dates & Locations

The Academy is four weeks long with five sessions. The classes will be held Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and one Saturday session from 9 am to noon. However, the first session will be held from 6:30 pm to 9 pm

Sessions will be held at Fire Station 1 and Fire Station 2. Classes will be held on May 1st through May 22nd. A reception and graduation ceremony will be held on May 29th at Fire Station 2.

Topics To Be Covered In The Academy

  • Introductions of class members and fire department personnel
  • JCFD history, current staffing levels, budget information
  • Fire station tours to include overview of all equipment and vehicles
  • Fire behavior/fire extinguisher training
  • SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus)
  • Vehicle extrication / Physical Agility Test
  • Hose evolution in full firefighting gear
  • Emergency medical operations to include simulated Code Blue
  • Graduation
